How much salt should my water softener use?
A softener set correctly for Greater Cincinnati water goes through four to six 40-pound bags a year for a family of four if the valve is dosed efficiently, or seven to nine if it is set to a heavier brine cycle. Both of those are normal.
Twelve or more is not normal. If you are buying a bag a month, the number programmed into your valve head is usually the reason. That is not wear, and it is not the softener dying.
What actually determines how much salt you use
Two things: how hard your water is, and how much water your household runs through the softener.
**People x gallons per person per day x grains per gallon = grains removed per day**
The Water Research Foundation's Residential End Uses of Water study measured average indoor use at 58.6 gallons per person per day. Outdoor spigots are usually plumbed ahead of the softener, so only indoor water counts.
A family of four on 8 gpg water: 4 x 59 x 8 is about 1,900 grains a day, or roughly 690,000 grains a year.
Now the salt. NSF/ANSI 44 will not call a softener efficiency-rated unless it removes at least 3,350 grains of hardness per pound of salt. California sets its bar at 4,000. But efficiency is a setting, not a fixed property of the machine. The higher the brine dose, the more capacity you get back and the fewer grains you get per pound. A valve on a light brine dose delivers somewhere between 3,300 and 4,000 grains per pound. The same valve on a heavy dose delivers 2,000 to 2,500.
So 690,000 grains a year is 170 to 210 pounds of salt on the efficient setting and 280 to 345 pounds on a heavy one. Four or five bags at one end, seven to nine at the other. All of that is a healthy softener doing its job.
Run the same house at 27 gpg and the arithmetic falls apart: 2.3 million grains a year, 580 to 700 pounds of salt on that same efficient setting, fifteen to eighteen bags. Same showers, same dishwasher, triple the salt, because of one number.
Greene County and Harrison cut their hardness. Softeners do not find out on their own.
Greene County used to deliver water at 27 grains per gallon. A reverse osmosis system at its Northwest Regional Water Treatment Plant changed that. Sanitary Engineering stepped the hardness down in stages beginning January 9, 2025 and finished on March 11, 2025 at 8 grains per gallon, or 140 mg/L, where it has stayed. The county's guidance to anyone keeping a softener was to recalibrate it to eight grains per gallon.
That covers Beavercreek, Beavercreek Township, Xenia Township, Wilberforce, Cedarville and Cedarville Township, the Shawnee Hills community, parts of Sugarcreek Township, and small parts of Centerville and Kettering. It does not cover Xenia, Fairborn, Jamestown or Bellbrook, which run their own public water systems, and it does not reach private wells.
Harrison did the same thing earlier. Its reverse osmosis plant was fully activated October 3, 2022, and the city told residents tap water should be noticeably softer between October 3 and October 10. Harrison went from 21 grains per gallon to 8, the same 140 mg/L Greene County landed on.
Your softener does not measure hardness. It counts gallons and assumes. Set at 27 when the water is 8, it believes it exhausts 3.4 times faster than it does, so it regenerates 3.4 times too often. For a family of four that is ten to twelve extra bags a year on an efficient valve and more on a heavy one, plus the water every needless regeneration sends down the drain. In Harrison the ratio is 2.6 to 1.
If your softener in Beavercreek was programmed before spring 2025, or in Harrison before October 2022, it is still dosing for water that no longer comes out of your tap. Nothing about that corrects itself. Somebody has to open the valve head and change the number by hand.
How to tell if your water softener is wasting salt
**1. Read the hardness setting on the valve.** Compare it to the number in your utility's most recent water quality report. That is the only figure that reflects what the plant actually delivers after treatment.
**2. Count your bags.** Four to nine a year for a family of four on 8 gpg water covers both efficient and heavy brine settings. Twelve or more means something is off.
**3. Time the regenerations.** That same household removes about 1,900 grains a day. A one cubic foot softener holds somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000 grains between regenerations depending on the brine setting, so it should be cycling every ten days to two weeks. Every two or three days means it thinks your water is far harder than it is.
**4. Find out if it is a timer.** Clock-based units regenerate on a calendar no matter how much water you used, including while you are on vacation.
**5. Look for a salt bridge.** If the salt level has not dropped in weeks but your water feels hard again, a crust has formed over an empty cavity and the unit is not making brine. Push a broom handle through it.
**6. Check the brine tank floor.** Mush under the salt means it is recrystallizing instead of drawing. Empty and clean the tank.

Greater Cincinnati Water Works runs two plants at two different numbers and does not publish which plant serves which neighborhood. Its own water quality report rounds those to 7 and 8 grains per gallon, so do not be thrown if the figures above look more precise than the ones you find there. Round up to the higher of the two and you are covered either way.
Northern Kentucky is the one row you should not read as a single number. The district's hardness swings between 4.6 and 9.8 grains across the year and averages about 7.3. Program for the high end. An average setting leaves the softener behind in the hard months.
GCWW serves Cincinnati along with Blue Ash, Montgomery, Kenwood, Sharonville, Springdale, Forest Park and Anderson Township. It also sells water to systems that bill you under their own name, among them Norwood, Reading, Mason, Lebanon and South Lebanon in Ohio, and Florence and the Boone County Water District in Kentucky. That list is not the whole of it. If your bill comes from a system that buys its water from GCWW, the GCWW numbers are your numbers.
On a private well none of this applies. Get a lab test, and test iron separately. Iron eats softener capacity the same way hardness does, and the common sizing rule is to add about 4 grains per gallon for every 1 ppm of iron.
Do you actually need a softener on Cincinnati water?
Sometimes not, and we would rather say so than sell you one.
The Water Quality Association's bands put 7 to 10.5 gpg in the hard range and anything above 10.5 in very hard. Most of Greater Cincinnati sits at the bottom of hard, between 7.3 and 8.2 gpg. That is enough to spot glassware and leave scale in a water heater. It is not the emergency some companies sell.
Both utilities that softened their own water said close to the same thing. Harrison recommended residents bypass their home softeners starting October 3, 2022 and take a few weeks to decide whether they wanted to keep using one. Greene County called removing a softener "a matter of preference" and pointed customers to bypass mode as the way to test the new water before deciding.
That is a fair test and it costs nothing. Put yours in bypass for two weeks and see whether you miss it.
Xenia at 23 gpg, Oxford at 20 to 22, and Aurora, Indiana at 21.05 are a different conversation. That water is genuinely very hard and it is not softened at the plant. There, a softener earns its keep.
Middletown, Springboro, Trenton, Loveland, Wilmington, Lawrenceburg and Batesville do not publish a hardness figure. Test before you buy anything.
Salt does not fix everything
A softener trades calcium and magnesium for sodium. It does not remove PFAS.
EPA finalized maximum contaminant levels of 4.0 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS in April 2024. Individual samples at several local systems have come back above that line: GCWW's Bolton plant (PFOA 5.0, PFOS 5.2), Dayton's Ottawa plant (PFOS 8.81), Indian Hill (PFOS 11.7), Wilmington (PFOS 8.79), Hamilton's South plant (PFOA 5.30), and Clermont County's MGS plant, which serves Miami, Goshen and Stonelick townships (PFOS 9.22 to 10.9).
Read those as sample results, not as a utility's annual level. Where a figure is the top of a detection range, as GCWW's Bolton numbers are, the plant's average is lower than the number shown. Compliance is judged on a running annual average against a limit that does not take effect until 2029, so none of these systems is out of compliance today. What the numbers do say is that PFAS is present in the finished water here.
The operative compliance deadline is April 26, 2029. In May 2026 EPA announced it will keep the 4.0 ppt limits, and separately proposed letting water systems request a two-year extension to April 26, 2031. That extension is opt-in rather than automatic, and it is still a proposed rule.
None of that changes what happens in your basement. Salt does not touch PFAS. Reverse osmosis is the treatment that removes it.
